Since 1947, Treffurt has been a hub for producing tools used by dentists and dental technicians. Under the GDR regime, a modest dentist's enterprise was nationalized and steadily expanded. Rapidly growing to become the area's second-largest employer with a workforce numbering in the hundreds, the Treffurt dental factory eventually branched out into manufacturing additional medical equipment. However, following German reunification, operations at the facility were ceased.
